21If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
I can’t remember what led me to these verses this time. Long ago I was a member of a church where a leader actually said she used this to punish her enemies. That never sat right with me. IMHO, His intention is that we help, encourage and pray for our enemies so that they might see Him in us and become Christians also.
What are your thoughts?
I feel that if our enemies are willing to accept good graces from those who help, then yes. But, if our enemies abuse and take our help for granted then they need more help than what we can give them. No one can change anyone that doesn’t want to be changed.

We can’t change them ourselves but our behavior towards them can redirect them towards Christ.

My understanding is that long ago, if a personβs fire went out, it was a kindness to provide burning coals so they could carry them home on their head and restart their fire. Also, showing kindness to an enemy may turn an enemy into a friend. Jesus asked us to love and pray for those who hate us.
